5 Common Professional Headshot Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

That perfect professional headshot can do wonders for your career.
It can project confidence, competence, and approachability – all qualities that can help you land that dream job or attract new clients.
But even the best intentions can fall victim to some common headshot mistakes.

Don’t let a misstep hold you back! Here are 5 common professional headshot mistakes (and how to avoid them):

  1. Skipping the Professional Photographer: Ditch the selfie!
Professional headshot photographers have the expertise and equipment to capture flattering lighting, backgrounds, and poses that elevate your image.
  2. Going the AI Route: Look, I get it. It’s fast. And CHEAP! But there, you go. It’s fast. And cheap.
Do be careful of those AI headshots. They’re not you, they don’t look like you (no matter how much you think it does).
There is no energy behind those make-believe eyes. And if you’re in any field where you need to create a trusting relationship with your clients, that’s going to immediately turn them off.
  3. Pamper Yourself: First impressions matter, and that includes your hair and makeup (for all genders).
Ensure your hair is neatly styled and your makeup is professional and natural-looking.
Don’t have the time or patience to do that for yourself? Let us know. We collab with some amazing hair and make-up professionals, some who will even come on set during your session to keep you in top form during your shoot!
  4. Fake Smiles and Awkward Poses: I love a good awkward JC Penney moment. But for business and gaining client’s trust (aka. giving you their hard earned money) means digging a little deeper.
A genuine smile is far more disarming than a forced grin.
Relax your shoulders, maintain good posture, and trust the photographer’s guidance for flattering poses.
Stacey Doyle Photography has been coaching people for over 21+ years, so when it comes to banishing the awkward, we’ve got you!
  5. Ignoring the Background: While the focus should be on you, the background shouldn’t be an afterthought.
Opt for a clean, uncluttered backdrop that complements your overall look.ANd make sure the background makes sense for you and your business and/or brand. If you’re selling handmade herbal potions, having a sleek corporate looking headshot may not be best.
